The Italian Armed Forces have deployed a batch of SAMP/T air defense missile systems to Kuwait as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the name of the US military’s international military intervention in Iraq, Syria and Libya against ISIS.
The deployment of the Italian SAMP/T air defense system is part of a bilateral cooperation agreement with Kuwait. The purpose is to expand the range of integrated air defense assets and capabilities deployed in the region.
SAMP / T is an air defense missile system jointly developed by Eurosam, MBDA and Thales. SAMP/T uses Aster surface-to-air missiles, which can effectively counter high-speed air threats such as tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, combat aircraft and UAS (Unmanned System).
Development of the missile began in 1990, and it was first mass-produced in 1997. The SAMP/T air defense missile system entered service with the Italian and French army in July 2008.
