The submarine project has reached a significant milestone, with the completion of the Critical Design Review (CDR) phase for the new submarines. This milestone marks the conclusion of the design phase. Norway has ordered four of these submarines, while Germany has ordered two of the 212CD model.
“This represents a crucial step forward in German-Norwegian cooperation, enhancing the future defense capabilities of both nations.” Bjørn Arild Gram, Norway’s Defense Minister said.
The milestone was achieved this summer, fully in line with the schedule established by the German-Norwegian Joint Project Organization (JPO) and the supplier Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).
The design process, which began almost three years ago when the contract was signed in the summer of 2021, involved a thorough review of over 100,000 pages of documentation by the JPO to ensure compliance with the nearly 6,000 contractual requirements.
The design work accounts for just under a quarter of the total costs for the six submarines, with expenses shared between Norway and Germany.
This success was made possible through close collaboration between the project organizations, Defense Material in Norway and BAAINBw in Germany.
With the design phase now complete, the joint project will shift its focus entirely to the construction and follow-up of the submarines. The first submarine is scheduled to begin testing in 2027 and is expected to be delivered to the Norwegian Navy in 2029. Additionally, Norway and Germany are in negotiations with the supplier to increase the number of 212CD submarines for both countries.
