The Swiss Security Commission is calling for a review of the country’s neutrality since 1515.
The report notes that Switzerland has already become a target of hybrid warfare – disinformation, espionage and cyberattacks. Experts recommend preparing the entire society, not just the army, for a possible conflict.
Given Russia’s growing threat, strengthening ties with the EU and NATO, increasing military spending, and expanding cooperation with the West are also suggested.
In addition, the commission is pushing for lifting a ban on arms re-exports, which has previously strained relations with Ukraine’s allies. The findings have already been presented to Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd and will form the basis of the country’s new security strategy for 2025.
The Swiss Ministry of Defense has recommended reconsidering Switzerland’s neutrality, which has been maintained for 500 years. The worsening situation in Europe drives the recommendation due to “Putin, money, and weapons,” urging Switzerland to explore deeper military cooperation with NATO and the EU.
