In a groundbreaking move, Romania has announced its willingness to discuss the possibility of sending a Patriot air defense system to Ukraine, following a meeting between President Klaus Iohannis and US President Joe Biden.
Romania will consider sending one of its Patriot air defense systems to neighboring Ukraine to help the war-torn country fend off Russian aerial attacks, President Klaus Iohannis said on Tuesday.
Speaking after a meeting with US President Joe Biden in Washington, Iohannis said the eventual decision can’t jeopardize his country’s security. A NATO member for two decades, Romania shares the longest border with Ukraine among the European Union’s member states.
This decision comes in response to appeals from German authorities to European Union and NATO member states to reinforce Ukraine’s air defenses amidst ongoing conflict with Russia.
With Romania currently operating 4 Patriot batteries and 3 more on order, the potential donation is part of a broader effort to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
While the specifics of the arrangement, including whether it will be free of charge or involve the air defense coalition purchasing the system, are yet to be determined, this development marks a significant step towards enhancing Ukraine’s security in the face of persistent aerial threats.
