Oshkosh Defense, LLC, a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation, has been awarded a five-year contract by the U.S. Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal (ACC-DTA) to continue delivering and modernizing the Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV).
The Fixed Price with Economic Price Adjustment Requirements contract, valued at approximately $1.54 billion, enables Oshkosh to produce and recapitalize Heavy Tactical Vehicles and associated trailers through 2031.
The FHTV fleet, a cornerstone of the U.S. Army’s logistical and combat support capabilities, includes the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT A4), Palletized Load System (PLS A1), PLS Trailer, and Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET A1). These vehicles are known for their adaptability, providing the payload, protection, and mobility necessary to operate in the most demanding environments. To date, Oshkosh has produced over 71,000 modernized heavy tactical vehicles and trailers for the U.S. military and allied nations.

Under this new contract, Oshkosh will integrate enhanced capabilities into the FHTV fleet through cost-effective upgrades. These targeted enhancements are designed to modernize the fleet, extend vehicle life, and reduce operating costs. The FHTV’s advanced architecture allows for the seamless integration of new features such as drive-by-wire capability, Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), electrification, export power, and fuel efficiency improvements.
“The evolution of the FHTV through technical insertions and recapitalization is a testament to our innovation and focus on increased capabilities,” Williams continued. “By integrating new technologies into the FHTV fleet, we are not only enhancing operational efficiency but also future-proofing our vehicles to meet the evolving needs of the Warfighter.”
In June 2024, as part of the FHTV IV contract extension, the Army awarded several contract modifications valued at $231.9 million for modernized trucks, kits, and kit installations. This new FHTV V contract allows the Army to begin purchasing vehicles starting in August 2024, ensuring that the fleet remains equipped to support the diverse and dynamic needs of the U.S. military.
