Russian forces are deploying North Korean troops in Kursk Oblast without armored support and winter clothes.
Their tactic involves concentrating these troops in forested areas and sending them to assault narrow sections of the front from multiple directions at once.
Kovalenko noted that North Korean forces have suffered significant losses.
“Meanwhile, Russian military correspondents avoid discussing the failures of North Korean troops, instead emphasizing their so-called ‘successful actions’ and concealing losses,” he added.
On Dec. 14, Ukraine’s HUR reported that North Korean forces, which Russia began deploying in assaults in Kursk Oblast in Nov. 2024, had already suffered their first losses due to successful Ukrainian defense operations.
On Dec. 15, aerial reconnaissance unit commander Robert Brovdi, known by the callsign Madyar, shared a video on his Telegram channel showing what he described as the bodies of 22 North Korean and Russian soldiers killed in an assault on Dec. 14 in Kursk Oblast.
Journalists from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Schemes project published images from sources among Ukrainian troops on the Kursk front. The photos depict dozens of bodies alongside destroyed equipment.

The Institute for the Study of War, in its Dec. 15 report, confirmed that North Korea’s forces faced challenges caused by heavy losses in battles against Ukraine’s Defense Forces and a language barrier.
