Lieutenant General Mainul Islam

The Immigration Police detained former Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) retired Lieutenant General Mainul Islam at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while he was travelling to Canada with his wife.

He was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Tuesday (December 24) evening.

On February 25, 2009, 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the BDR mutiny and the brutal massacre in Peelkhana. Mainul Islam took charge of the force’s Director General within 48 hours of the incident.

Confirming the matter, Special Branch Chief Additional Golam Rasul said the immigration police barred him at about 5:00 pm on Tuesday as he was preparing to travel abroad.

‘He has been instructed to assist the newly formed commission with necessary information about the 2009 BDR carnage. He has also been asked not to leave the country until the investigation is completed,’ he said.

Earlier on December 23, retired lieutenant general Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, adviser to the home affairs ministry, said that the government formed a seven-member commission to reinvestigate the 2009 BDR carnage.

Mainul Islam was appointed the director general of the Bangladesh Rifles within 48 hours of the BDR mutiny on February 25-26, 2009. He served there until May 2010.

On February 25–26, 2009, in a mutiny, 57 military officers, including the chief of the BDR, Major General Shakil Ahmed, and 17 civilians were killed at the then BDR headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka city.

Bangladesh Rifles was officially renamed as the Border Guard Bangladesh in January 2011.

Mainul Islam is the brother of Mohammad Atiqul Islam, former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, who was arrested in the capital’s Mohakhali DOHS area on October 16.
