The Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) has signed its first defense procurement contract under the U.S. aid package, collaborating with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to expand the production of Iron Dome interceptors.
The deal, announced on January 16, 2025, underscores a strategic partnership aimed at bolstering Israel’s defense against evolving threats.
The agreement, facilitated by the U.S. aid package finalized in Washington, allocates $5.2 billion to strengthen Israel’s air and missile defense systems, including the Iron Dome, David’s Sling Weapon System, and an advanced laser defense platform. This funding is part of a broader $8.7 billion aid package approved by Congress in April 2024.
IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir emphasized the importance of the deal, stating, “The Iron Dome system has transformed the battlefield, protected critical infrastructure, and saved many civilian lives. This agreement will further enhance and expand the system’s capabilities.”
The Iron Dome system, developed by Israel and produced in collaboration with the U.S. government, has demonstrated exceptional performance during recent conflicts, intercepting rocket, missile, and drone threats. The system integrates state-of-the-art technologies, making it one of the most advanced air defense systems globally.
Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Dr. Daniel Gold, Head of the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), noted, “The procurement of Iron Dome interceptors is critical in ensuring Israel’s security against numerous threats. The system exemplifies Israel’s technological superiority and long-term investment in research and development.”
Rafael’s CEO, Yoav Tourgeman, also highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating, “This procurement represents another vote of confidence in the Iron Dome system and its continuously upgrading capabilities in the face of threats.”
The signing ceremony, held at the IMOD headquarters in Tel Aviv, was attended by senior officials, including leaders from Rafael and representatives from the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA). Rafael, the primary contractor, will work with ELTA Systems and mPrest Defense to deliver the interceptors.
The Iron Dome system’s expansion is expected to enhance Israel’s ability to counter short- and medium-range threats while maintaining technological and strategic advantages. The collaboration between the U.S. and Israeli defense industries highlights the strength of their partnership and mutual commitment to advancing security measures in an increasingly volatile region.
With over 350 Iron Dome interceptors in active use and a proven track record of saving lives and protecting infrastructure, the system’s continued development ensures Israel’s readiness against evolving threats.
