Chinese Navy commissions first Type 054B frigate

As part of its efforts to modernize the naval fleet, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has commissioned its first Type 054B frigate.

As disclosed, the commissioning ceremony took place at a military port in Qingdao on January 22, 2025. The commissioning ceremony marks a significant milestone in China’s naval development, underscoring the country’s growing capabilities in modern warfare and maritime defense.

The vessel Luohe, with hull number “545”, boasts a displacement of approximately 5,000 tons, placing it in the mid-size category of modern frigates. As part of the Type 054B class, it represents the latest evolution of China’s naval frigate design, incorporating a range of advanced technologies and capabilities. The vessel was designed and constructed in China.

According to China’s Ministry of National Defense, the Type 054B frigate features advancements in stealth technology, combat command systems, and firepower integration to enhance overall performance.

With these advanced capabilities, the Luohe is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing the operational effectiveness of China’s naval task forces.

To remind, in December last year, the PLAN launched its first Type 076 new-generation amphibious assault ship. The vessel Sichuan has a full-load displacement of over 40,000 tonnes and features a dual-island superstructure along with a full-length flight deck.

The vessel comes equipped with electromagnetic catapult and arrestor technologies, enabling it to carry fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and amphibious equipment.
