Germany Receives Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 Anti-air System

Rheinmetall has delivered the first Boxer Skyranger 30 cannon-based air defense vehicle to the Bundeswehr.

This system is a verification model that will be used for training and testing over the next few months.

Last year, Germany ordered the newly delivered verification model along with 18 other Skyranger vehicles to be manufactured in serial production.

The 18 vehicles are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028.

The Skyranger 30 air defense system can counter threats at close and very close ranges, allowing for both autonomous and networked operations.

The turret is mounted on the 8×8 Boxer tactical vehicle and integrates a 30mm x 173 KCE revolver cannon as well as ground-to-air guided missiles.

The system uses AHEAD ammunition with programmable airburst detonation, allowing it to counter drones.

Several NATO and EU member states have acquired or considered purchasing the Skyranger 30 system in recent years.

Most recently, the Netherlands announced last month that it would procure 22 Skyranger 30s with a budget of 1.3 billion euros ($1.35 billion).

The vehicles will be equipped with surface-to-air missiles and a 30-millimeter rapid-fire cannon capable of firing up to 1,250 rounds per minute to counter drones, aircraft, and helicopters.

In December 2023, Hungary signed a contract worth 30 million euros ($32.9 million) with Rheinmetall to develop the Skyranger 30 turret for the Lynx KF41 tracked vehicle’s future air defense variant.

Austria and Denmark have also ordered the system for different platforms.
