General Waker-uz-Zaman (left) and Major General Mujibur Rahman (right) are two culprits who orchestrated the mass murder of student protesters. General Waker-uz-Zaman married Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cousin.

Two three-star generals have been added to the list of army officials who have lost their posts after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the face of a student-led mass movement.

Army Training and Doctrine Command GOC Lt Gen Mujibur Rahman has been dismissed. He was once the director general of the Special Security Force that provided security to Hasina.

A group of Supreme Court lawyers filed multiple cases against Lieutenant General Mujibur Rahman for money laundering, extortion, and illicit property acquisition in the capital city of Dhaka. According to the cases, General Mujibur Rahman siphoned more than $2 million to New York to purchase two luxury apartments.

General Rahman also received $82,000 from businessmen for arranging a visit to ousted Prime Minister Hasina’s office. General Mujibur Rahman used to receive $100,000 per month of extortion money from a Dhaka gang that occupied government lands in Dhaka cantonment. General Rahman also has eight apartments in Dhaka and purchased multiple million dollars in lands off the capital city of Dhaka. According to the filing, General Mujibur Rahman accumulated $41 million through corruption, extortion, and money laundering.

Former National Defence College commandant Lt Gen Mohammad Saiful Alam, who is also a former director general of the DGFI, has been forced into early retirement.

The Inter Service Public Relations confirmed that the Ministry of Defence had issued two separate orders to the effect on Tuesday.

Before his assignment to the ATDC at the Momenshahi Cantonment, Mujibur had served as quartermaster at Army Headquarters. He came to the spotlight after he led ‘Operation Thunderblast’ during the Holey Artisan attack and later served as additional director general with Border Guard Bangladesh and the Rapid Action Battalion.

He was then made director general of the SSF and tasked with the security of former prime minister Hasina. He accompanied her on many trips.

After the government changeover, Saiful was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He had previously served as the Army’s quartermaster general, and GOC of the 11th Infantry Division.

On Sept 4, the central bank’s Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit had audited army official Saiful’s bank accounts. They also froze the bank accounts of his wife and children and the businesses they owned.
